TREE MAINTENANCE EXPLAINED....

Described below are some of the techniques from the British Standard: "Recommendations for Tree Work (BS3998)". This should help you decide what might be the most appropriate technique for your tree and will enable you to use the correct terms to describe your intended works. A combination of these techniques may be used or other methods not specified here.

We will provide you with detailed advice.
CROWN THINNING
Crown thinning is the selective removal of internal branches evenly throughout the tree to reduce the density of the crown. However, it does not change the overall size of the tree. Crown thinning would not normally be carried out on conifers, so it is generally confined to deciduous broadleaf tree.
Crown thinning is designed to reduce damage that could result from crown resistance to strong winds. Crown thinning may be carried out to admit more air and light into and through the canopy.

Crown thinning opens the foliage of a tree, reduces wieght on heavy limbs, and helps retain the tree's natural shape. The volume of the branches to be removed will normally be expressed as a percentage of the whole crown.

CROWN REDUCTION
With Crown Reduction we reduce a certain percentage of the overall height and size of the tree by removing the ends on branches evenly throughout the crown, leaving a balanced and maintained shape. It is a complete crown treatment and not just a crown recution in height with no regard for the side branches.
It is normally specified in percentage terms that the crown is to be reduced by. This technique is used for many reasons such as to reduce wind resistance, water up-take, to control the size of a tree in a restricted environment or to allow more light through

CROWN LIFTING
Crown lifting is the selective removal of the lower branches of the trees crown o increase the distance between the base of the canopy and ground level. This type of pruning should, if possible, be carried out before the tre reaches maturity in order to avoid large wounds. This allows more light through and can prevent obstruction.

TREE DISMANTLING
Very often space is limited and the tree must be taken down piece by piece but if the space and safety permit, a tree can be felled in one piece. If the area below the tree is clear and free from obstructions cut branches can simply be allowed to fall. When branches are too large or heavy for the climber to hold and throw clear or obstructions prevent their 'free falling', then lowering ropes will be used.
We can safely dismantle any tree to ground level. We have years of experience of working with all sorts of trees and sites, including removing very large trees from very restricted sites.
